Synopsis:

Jyoti Bhatt’s photographs are a portrait of India over a particular span of time, over the vast span of its length and breadth. In essence it is the portrait of a nation in space-time, but not just that. It is also an impression of an India that is beneath the facade of its unfolding history. Unlike images that mark public events and are traceable to some narrative that marks the collective memorialization process, these pictures present the underlying non-narrative, the substratum; like a hidden river it runs quietly beneath the surface. The film attempts to gather these impressions and bind them into little booklets of poetry, sewn together with words and spaces that were responses to the images presented, sometimes culled from memory, sometimes simple observation, or a moment’s pause to wonder.
